Woodturnings by John H. Williams

Artist Statement

For 20 years I built furniture as a hobby then took two wood turning courses, a box building course, and a carving course offered at the local community college. Since 1995, I have worked on perfecting and refining my skills at the lathe.

Wood itself is an amazing material and thousands of forms have been turned by many to take best advantage of its character and beauty. But I wanted to do something unique with the surfaces by carving, burning, and coloring. In 2007 I introduced a wood burned texture of closely spaced lines that are painted over to create a glaze like finish. It is a totally spontaneous process that produces a surreal and original surface with each piece. Since then the burned patterns have varied in how they are applied. The texture can represent turbulent surfaces such as water or lava fields, the pattern can appear to overlap and twist, and the coloring can be shaded to further add visual depth. This color/texture is my signature method and remains unique.
